3 ways vandals can disrupt a workplace

Some business owners will believe that theft is the ultimate threat to the security of their premises. And while this is true to a degree, there's plenty of damage an individual can do without taking anything.

For this reason, you want to have a system like video alarms installed. As soon as the motion detectors are tripped, video is recorded and sent to a monitoring centre so trained professionals can react to the situation and dispatch the appropriate response.

1. Graffiti

This crime can result in huge financial costs for businesses, despite the fact they don't actually lose any property or assets in the offence. Graffiti involves defacing a building or items within it, often with spray paint or other chemicals that are not only hazardous, but difficult to remove.

The extent of the damage is highlighted by the lengths Sydney Trains has gone to in its pursuit of the ultimate graffiti fighting tool. Recently, the company announced new technology that can 'sniff' out the gases given off by common graffiti tools, tripping an alarm and hopefully catching an offender in the process.

If that's not a sign that graffiti needs to be taken seriously, we don't know what is.

2. Damaging machinery

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, around $48 billion worth of construction work was performed around the country last year. That's a lot of jobs and, more importantly, a lot of expensive machinery at risk of damage.

For bigger jobs, expensive machinery is often left on site for days or even weeks while work is completed. So, what happens if vandals get their hands on it?

In these events, the safety of the equipment can be compromised and in worst cases it can be rendered inoperable, impacting a company's ability to complete work. For construction sites, it might be worth employing mobile security patrols to keep tabs on it overnight.

3. General vandalism

On top of targeting expensive equipment, some vandals will set out to damage as much of your business as possible.

This could be something as simple as smashing windows, or as sinister as setting things on fire. Either way, it's important to deter offenders and also limit the amount of time they spend on your property. Combining video alarms with mobile patrols and static guards ensures you have the full range of NSR's services at your disposal.
