Understanding crime in Queensland – and what you can do

When viewing crime statistics in Queensland, it can often appear as if things haven't changed much in the past 16 years. According to the Queensland Police Service, there were 458,790 offences in the state last year. In 2000, there were 449,078 offences.

Crime rates are likely to hit similar numbers this year, with robberies, vehicle thefts and trespassing incidents pertinent threats to businesses and individuals alike.

A closer look at the figures

Interestingly, while the total number of offences has remained largely consistent over the past few years, individually things have changed.

Let's take a look at the individual crime statistics in Queensland:

  • Robberies: While high in 2000, subsequent years have seen a gradual decrease. In fact, 2015 and 2014 recorded some of the lowest rates since the Queensland Police Service began the most recent records.
  • Unlawful entry: Like robberies, the instances of unlawful entry have experienced a drop off over the last few years. 2015 saw 32,483 unlawful entries while 2001 saw 67,781.
  • Unlawful use of motor vehicles: These figures have dropped sharply since 2000, with figures that year coming in at 19,224. Last year, just 9,433 instances were logged by the police.
  • Trespassing and vagrancy: In a reverse of the trends in the above crimes, instances of trespassing and vagrancy climbed since 2000. That year saw 2,599 instances recorded, while last year saw 5,432 instances.

With crime rates staying relatively consistent, - at least in terms of overall instance recordings - it's important to consider just how useful security services can be.

This means cameras monitored by security professionals around the clock, mobile patrols that can seek out instances of trespassing or vandalism, and static guards that can look after a particular area for as long as required.
